The bp International Centre for Advanced Materials (bp-ICAM) is a long‑established academic-industry research partnership between bp, The University of Manchester, the University of Cambridge, Imperial College London and the University of Illinois Urbana‑Champaign. Our interdisciplinary research teams address challenges in the energy sector through projects spanning materials, chemistry, catalysis, biosciences, subsurface science and related fields.

Since our launch in 2012, the bp-ICAM has supported research ranging from PhD‑led exploratory studies to large‑scale strategic initiatives involving multiple teams. We have strengthened research capability, encouraged interdisciplinary collaboration, and provided students and early career researchers with experience of working alongside bp experts. Our model embeds bp Mentors within project teams, helping to ensure research remains industrially relevant and supports translation from laboratory research to application.
